Promptchan is not primarily a chat app. I need to say that upfront because it shows up in the same recommendation lists as SpicyChat, Candy.ai, and CrushOn, and people sign up expecting a conversation partner. What Promptchan actually is: an NSFW image generator with multiple style engines, inpainting tools, and enough control to produce genuinely impressive output, if you know how to write a prompt. If you don’t, you’ll get muddy, generic results and wonder what the fuss was about. This is a tool, not a toy, and the skill ceiling is real. (One housekeeping note: the product lives at promptchan.com. The promptchan.ai domain you’ll see cited in older roundups no longer resolves.)

The platform launched in 2023 and has iterated steadily since. It supports realistic, anime, and 3D render styles, each with different strengths. You type a text prompt, optionally adjust parameters, and get an image back. There’s an editing suite for inpainting (modifying specific regions of an image), outpainting, and style adjustments. Paid tiers unlock higher resolution and faster generation. One flag: chat is now front-and-center in their marketing (the site leads with “AI Girlfriend Chat, Video & Images”), but our chat testing predates that push, and as tested the chat was an afterthought next to the image tools. If conversation is the main thing you want, go to SpicyChat or Secret Desires. You’re here for the pictures.

Image quality: high ceiling, variable floor

The realistic mode is Promptchan’s strongest engine and the reason most people use it. A well-written prompt produces output that’s legitimately impressive: accurate lighting, natural skin texture, coherent body proportions, and faces that look like actual faces rather than the uncanny-valley mashups cheaper generators produce. I spent three weeks iterating on prompts and the difference between my day-one output and day-twenty output was dramatic. Prompt engineering matters here more than on any other platform in this category.

The anime mode is solid for what it is: clean lines, consistent style, good color. If you’re into anime aesthetics, this competes with dedicated anime generators. The 3D render mode is the weakest of the three but still usable for specific scenarios.

Here’s a paraphrased prompt and result description from a realistic generation:

Prompt: “Woman in her 30s, dark hair in a loose braid, sitting on the edge of a hotel bed in morning light, wearing an unbuttoned white dress shirt, looking directly at the camera, warm golden hour tones, shallow depth of field”

Result: Accurate to the prompt in every detail. Natural pose, correct lighting direction, the braid was actually a braid and not a blob of dark texture. Face was specific. It looked like a person, not a composite. Hands resting on the bed were correct. One of maybe four out of ten realistic generations where hands survived intact.

That last point matters. Hands are still the failure mode. Roughly six out of ten generations will have at least one hand issue: extra fingers, merged digits, anatomically impossible bends. This is an industry-wide problem, not unique to Promptchan, but you’ll encounter it constantly. The workaround is inpainting: generate the image, then use the editing tools to regenerate just the hands. It adds a step but it works.

Inpainting and editing: the real differentiator

This is where Promptchan separates from competitors that offer basic image gen as a chat add-on. The inpainting tool lets you mask a region of an image and regenerate just that part. Bad hands? Mask them, re-generate. Want to change the outfit but keep the face and pose? Mask the clothing area and prompt a new outfit. Want to remove the background? Mask it.

I used inpainting on about 60% of my final images. The workflow is: generate a base image, evaluate it, fix the weak areas with targeted inpaints. It’s iterative and it takes longer than a single generation, but the results are dramatically better than accepting whatever the first generation gives you. No other NSFW-focused platform offers this level of post-generation control. DreamGF has basic editing; Secret Desires has none. Promptchan is the only one where the editing tools feel like part of the intended workflow rather than an afterthought.

Chat: marketed harder than it tested

Promptchan has a chat feature, and their marketing now leads with it (“AI Girlfriend Chat, Video & Images” is the current front-page framing). My testing predates that push. As tested, the characters were generic, the conversation quality was well below SpicyChat or Secret Desires, and the memory was minimal. The chat may have improved since (the marketing emphasis suggests they’re investing in it), but I can’t vouch for that, and until I retest, my advice stands: if you’re evaluating Promptchan primarily for chat, verify it yourself on the free tier first. Buy SpicyChat for $5.95/month for chat and Promptchan for images if you want both. You’ll likely still pay less than a single premium-tier subscription on most competitors.

Pricing: gem-based tiers

Promptchan runs on a gem/credit system within a subscription, with three paid tiers. The figures below are from our testing. Prices have gone up since: in September 2026 the upgrade page lists Plus at $14.99 (100 gems), Premium at $23.99 (400 gems) and Pro at $33.99 (800 gems plus unlimited casual generations). What we tested:

  • Free: Limited generations per day, lower resolution, slower queue. Enough to test whether the tool works for you, not enough to produce serious output.
  • Plus ($11.99/month at the time of testing): The real entry. Higher resolution, more daily gems, faster generation, full access to inpainting tools. Most casual users should be here.
  • Premium ($18.99/month at the time of testing): More gems, higher concurrency, extra editing features. The tier for regular users who iterate frequently.
  • Pro ($26.99/month at the time of testing): Maximum gem bucket and priority queue for heavy daily users.

At the Plus price point, this is the best NSFW image generator for the money. The only competitor in the same conversation is DreamGF’s image features, which are more automated but less controllable. If you want to point and click, DreamGF. If you want to steer, Promptchan.

Uncensored and safety

Promptchan is explicitly an uncensored NSFW image platform. The content policy restricts minors and real identifiable people; beyond that, it’s permissive. You will not hit the mid-generation refusals that DreamGF occasionally triggers. You will not need to learn euphemistic prompt workarounds. The platform does what it says on the label. Standard illegal content rules apply, and the reporting system exists for abuse, but within legal adult content the guardrails are the lightest in this review.

Privacy

Email registration, no phone or ID. Generated images are stored in your account gallery, and you can delete individual images or clear everything. The privacy policy states images aren’t shared publicly unless you explicitly post them to the community feed. Generation prompts are stored alongside images. If you want your content to stay private, don’t use the public sharing feature, and periodically clear your gallery if storage concerns you. Standard fare for the category.

The prompt skill problem

I want to be direct about this because it’s the biggest factor in whether Promptchan works for you. If you have experience with Stable Diffusion, Midjourney, or any text-to-image tool, you’ll pick up Promptchan quickly and get strong results within a few days. The prompt syntax is similar: descriptive, comma-separated attributes, style tags, negative prompts for things you want to avoid.

If you’ve never written an image generation prompt, your first week will be frustrating. The platform provides some starter prompts and a community gallery with visible prompts, which helps. But there’s a genuine learning curve, and the gap between a novice prompt and an expert prompt is the gap between a blurry generic image and something you’d actually want to save.

This is the trade-off Promptchan makes: maximum control in exchange for required skill. Secret Desires gives you less control but delivers decent images without prompt expertise. Promptchan gives you more control and makes you earn it.

Who should buy this

  • Image-first users who care more about visual output than conversation
  • Stable Diffusion / Midjourney users who want an uncensored hosted alternative without running local hardware
  • Users who want editing control: inpainting, outpainting, iterative refinement
  • People who enjoy the craft of prompt engineering and iterating toward a specific result
  • Anime and 3D artists looking for style-specific generation

Who should skip this

  • Anyone primarily looking for chat: buy SpicyChat or Secret Desires instead
  • Users who want good results without learning prompt syntax (Secret Desires or DreamGF require less skill)
  • People who want a mobile-first experience, since Promptchan’s editing tools work best on desktop
  • Anyone expecting perfect hands, because you’ll be inpainting a lot

Verdict

Promptchan is the best uncensored image generation tool in its price bracket, and the inpainting workflow puts it in a different category from platforms that bolt image gen onto a chat product. The ceiling is high: genuinely impressive realistic output, strong anime mode, real editing control. The floor is low if you can’t prompt. This is a power tool for users who want to build specific images through iteration, not a push-button image machine. If that sounds like work rather than fun, Secret Desires or DreamGF will make you happier with less effort. If it sounds like exactly what you want, nothing else in this price range competes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Promptchan safe to use?

Yes. Email-only registration, no phone or ID required, and generated images stay private to your account unless you actively post them to the community feed. No known breaches. Prompts are stored alongside images, so periodically clear the gallery if that concerns you. Standard category risk, nothing unusual flagged.

How much does Promptchan cost?

At the time of our testing: Plus at $11.99/month was the real entry, with higher resolution, more daily gems, and full inpainting access. Premium at $18.99/month got you more gems and extra editing features, and Pro at $26.99/month was the heavy-use tier with maximum gems and priority queue. In September 2026 the same tiers cost $14.99, $23.99 and $33.99, with fewer gems each. There’s a free tier with limited generations per day.

What is a gem on Promptchan and how many do I need?

Gems are Promptchan’s internal credit currency. Each image generation and each inpaint costs gems, and your tier determines your daily bucket. For casual use (a few images a day), the Plus tier is enough. If you iterate heavily with inpainting, which describes most serious users because that’s the whole point of the platform, you’ll burn gems fast and want Premium or Pro. Budget the tier to your actual iteration volume.

Can you use Promptchan for free?

Yes, and the free tier is enough to tell whether the tool fits your workflow. You get limited generations per day at lower resolution with a slower queue. Enough to test prompt syntax and see whether the output quality is there for you, not enough to produce serious finished work. If you like what you see on free, Plus is the step up.

Is Promptchan uncensored?

Yes, more uncensored than any other major platform in this category for images specifically. The only restrictions are minors and real identifiable people. Beyond that, there are no mid-generation refusals and no need to learn euphemistic prompt workarounds. If DreamGF’s image filter has frustrated you, Promptchan is the direct answer.

Is Promptchan better than DreamGF for images?

For control and output ceiling, yes: inpainting, outpainting, style switching, and prompt-level precision are in a different category from DreamGF’s slider-based automation. For push-button convenience with no prompt skill required, DreamGF wins. If you want to point and click, DreamGF. If you want to steer the output through iteration, Promptchan.

Does Promptchan have chat?

Yes, and chat is now front-and-center in Promptchan’s marketing (“AI Girlfriend Chat, Video & Images”). Our chat testing predates that push: as tested, the characters were generic, writing quality was well below SpicyChat.ai or Secret Desires AI, and memory was minimal. It may have improved since, but verify it on the free tier before buying for chat. If you want both chat and images, SpicyChat at $5.95 plus Promptchan’s entry tier still likely costs less than a single premium tier on most multi-feature competitors.
