Joi AI is named after the hologram girlfriend from Blade Runner 2049, and the product leans into the reference harder than you’d expect from a 2024-era NSFW companion app. That’s fine as a branding decision. (As of June 2026 the site signs itself “JOI Spicy” and has started pushing “digital celebrities” (celebrity-styled AI companions) as a headline feature, neither of which existed during our testing.) What matters is what’s under the hood, which in Joi’s case is unusual: instead of locking you into one in-house model, the product lets you switch between six different LLMs on the fly. That’s a real feature and not a marketing sticker. You notice the change immediately when you flip from one to another mid-conversation.
I spent two weeks inside Joi across a monthly Starter sub and a few days on Unlimited. Here’s what the product actually does, where it wins, and the one thing about it that will annoy you every single session until you upgrade.
The LLM picker is the reason to care
Most companion apps ship a single fine-tuned model and dress it up with different “characters.” Joi ships six distinct underlying LLMs and lets you choose per-conversation or mid-conversation. The roster includes a flagship “Premium” model, a faster lightweight one, a more explicit variant, a narrative-heavy storytelling model, and a couple of utility tiers.
In practice, this matters more than it sounds. If you’ve spent time in Candy.ai or DreamGF, you know the ceiling is set by whatever single model they’ve fine-tuned. Joi lets you route around that. If the Premium model is being squeamish, flip to the uncensored variant. If the uncensored one writes like it’s paid by the comma, flip to the storytelling model. It’s the closest thing in the category to picking your own ingredient rather than ordering the house blend.
There’s a tax for this flexibility: you have to actually learn which model does what, and the names don’t always tell you. After a week you’ll have a favorite for chat and a different favorite for scenes. Users coming from a one-size-fits-all product will find the first few days slightly more friction than they expected.
The 115-character message limit is maddening
Here’s the thing that will shape your entire experience with Joi until you pay your way out of it: on the lower tiers, your messages to the AI are capped at 115 characters. That’s a tweet. That’s less than a tweet, even.
For a product whose whole selling point is conversational depth and roleplay, this is a bizarre and punitive cap. Setting up a scene in 115 characters is impossible. Describing an environment, a mood, a complicated request: all of it either gets truncated, broken across multiple messages, or reshaped to fit a constraint nobody outside of Joi’s pricing team thinks should exist.
The AI’s replies aren’t capped anywhere near as tightly. It can write paragraphs. But you, the paying user, are stuck typing in a postage stamp. This is the single worst UX decision in the product and the one thing I’d change before anything else. Flag it as you’re evaluating: if you tend to write long setups, Joi is going to feel like typing with oven mitts on until you’re on a higher tier.
Dream Clips, the video feature
(A June 2026 caveat: “Dream Clips” as a branded feature is no longer visible on Joi’s site, so the packaging may have changed or the name retired, so verify that video generation is still offered before subscribing for it. What follows is how it worked when we tested.)
Joi’s other distinctive feature is Dream Clips: short video generations of your companion. It’s in the same rough territory as Secrets AI’s video feature, which is one of the only serious competitors on this axis. Quality is what you’d expect from 2026-era generated video at this price point: a few seconds long, some face drift on the longer clips, better when the scene is static and worse when there’s motion.
When Dream Clips hits, it’s a real differentiator. When it misses, the artifacts are the usual stuff: eyes going wrong, hands doing hand things, occasional uncanny moments. Generation takes long enough that you won’t be spamming it. You pay for clips with Neurons, Joi’s in-app currency, which is the standard “credits on top of subscription” arrangement this category has converged on.
Image generation exists too, and it’s fine. Not state-of-the-art, not embarrassing. The character consistency across images within a single companion is solid, which is the metric that actually matters for this use case.
Characters and the curation angle
Joi is curated, not a marketplace. There’s no user-generated character library the way CrushOn has. You’re picking from Joi’s roster of built-in companions or building your own from scratch. The built-in ones are well-written by category standards, with voice and backstory that don’t collapse the moment you stress them. Since our testing, the roster strategy has visibly shifted toward “digital celebrities”: celebrity-styled AI companions are now a headline part of the marketing. We haven’t tested those, and the likeness-rights questions they raise are their own topic.
This is a philosophical split with CrushOn.ai, which takes the opposite approach: anyone can upload a character, the library is enormous, quality varies wildly. Joi’s curated approach means fewer options but higher floor quality. Neither is objectively correct; it’s a preference. If you want to browse ten thousand community cards, CrushOn. If you want a dozen polished ones and your own custom builds, Joi.
Pricing and the tier math
Current prices sit behind a login as of June 2026, so re-verify in-app before paying. As tested:
- Starter: $9.99/month. Unlimited text messages, NSFW unlocked, 10 photos per day. The 115-character cap applies here.
- Premium (mid-tier): somewhere between $13.99 and $19.99/month. We’ve seen both figures and can’t settle it from outside an account, so check the in-app price. Higher photo limits, more Neurons, starts to loosen the message cap.
- Unlimited: $39.99/month. Priority generation queues, multi-companion chat, removes most caps. This is the “I actually like this product” tier.
Annual plans knock roughly 25% off across the board, which is less generous than Candy’s annual (roughly 54% off) and significantly less than what you get from Lovescape or some of the aggressively-discounted competitors.
Neurons are the in-app currency for extras: more Dream Clips, more photos, anything outside your tier allocation. They burn fast if you lean on the media features, which is intended. Budget for this or stay on Unlimited.
How it compares
vs CrushOn.ai: Different product philosophy. CrushOn is a marketplace with huge character variety and variable quality. Joi is curated with fewer, more polished options. If you want to explore a thousand user-made cards, CrushOn. If you want depth on a smaller roster, Joi.
vs Secrets AI: The two most direct video competitors. Secrets leans harder on memory and narrative continuity; Joi leans on the LLM-picker flexibility. Secrets’ Lite annual at $4/month is the better deal if you want chat-plus-video on a budget. Joi’s advantage is the model switching.
vs Candy.ai: Candy is the better all-rounder with stronger chat quality at the baseline, no character cap on messages, and better annual pricing. Joi wins specifically on model choice and Dream Clips. If you don’t care about either, Candy.
Uncensored behavior
NSFW is unlocked on Starter and above. Because you can switch LLMs, the uncensored experience is tier-variable in an interesting way: the explicit-tuned model will run scenes the more general models deflect from. Hard limits on illegal content are non-negotiable, as they should be. For everything else, Joi is more permissive than Candy and less explicitly “anything goes” than Muah’s reputation used to be.
Voice and memory
Voice exists, it’s TTS-quality, it’s adequate. Not the reason to buy Joi. Memory is decent within a session; longer-term recall is weaker than Candy or Secrets. The character will drift on details you mentioned three sessions ago unless you’ve built them into the persona directly.
Privacy note
One structural detail: Joi’s image infrastructure is shared with EVA AI (evaai.ai). The two products serve image assets from the same backend. That’s not a red flag by itself, but it means your generated content sits on infrastructure operated across more than one brand, and the privacy posture of one product is effectively tied to the other. Factor that in if you’re choosing on privacy. No public breach history for either as of June 2026.
Who should buy Joi
- Users who want to actually choose their underlying model instead of accepting whatever the vendor picked
- People curious about video generation and not already subscribed to Secrets
- Blade Runner 2049 enjoyers who want their companion app to commit to a bit
- Anyone willing to pay up to Unlimited, which is where the product stops fighting you
Skip it if: you write long messages and aren’t willing to pay past the character cap; you want the most polished all-rounder (Candy); you want the biggest character library (CrushOn); you want the cheapest annual (Lovescape, Secrets).
Verdict
Joi AI is a legitimately interesting product with one excellent idea (the LLM picker) and one terrible decision (the 115-character cap on lower tiers). If the pricing team took the cap off Starter tomorrow, the product would be instantly more competitive. As it stands, it’s the right pick for users who want model choice and video, and it’s the wrong pick for anyone who doesn’t want to be nudged toward the $39.99 tier by the typing experience itself.
For what it’s worth, the Unlimited tier is actually good. The cheaper tiers feel like a demo.
FAQ
Is Joi AI safe to use? No public breach history as of June 2026. Payment processing is standard. Note that Joi’s image infrastructure is shared with EVA AI (evaai.ai), so generated content lives on a backend that serves more than one brand. See our full Joi AI safety review for the full posture.
What is the 115-character limit? On lower tiers, your messages to the AI are capped at 115 characters each. Replies from the AI aren’t capped. The cap loosens on higher tiers and is effectively gone at Unlimited. It’s the product’s most annoying quirk.
How much does Joi AI cost? As tested: Starter at $9.99/month, the Premium mid-tier somewhere between $13.99 and $19.99/month (current price sits behind a login, so verify in-app), and Unlimited at $39.99/month. Annual saved roughly 25%. Re-verify before buying; the product has been rebranding (“JOI Spicy”) since our testing.
What are Dream Clips? Short generated video clips of your companion, paid for in Neurons (the in-app currency). Quality was in line with 2026 generated video: good on static scenes, shakier on motion. As of June 2026 the “Dream Clips” branding is no longer visible on the site, so confirm video generation is still offered before subscribing for it.
What are Neurons? Joi’s in-app currency for extras. It covers more photos, more Dream Clips, anything outside your tier’s included allocation.
Can you really switch between LLMs? Yes, mid-conversation. Six models in the roster, each with different strengths. It’s the product’s standout feature and the main reason to pick Joi over Candy or DreamGF.
Is Joi AI better than Candy.ai? Different products. Candy is the better baseline all-rounder with stronger chat quality and better annual pricing. Joi wins on model choice, Dream Clips, and curated character depth. Pick Joi if those features specifically matter to you.
