The default assumption in this category is straight, cis, and male
Open almost any AI companion app’s marketing page. You’ll see a woman. The character creator opens with a female preset. The preloaded personalities are girlfriend archetypes. The NSFW image defaults are calibrated for straight male taste. That’s not a conspiracy. It’s where the money has historically been. But it means LGBTQ+ users are either served as a deliberate counter-positioning move (rare) or through flexibility and community workarounds (more common).
This ranking reflects that reality. Apps that purposefully serve a non-straight-male audience rank higher. Apps that are just flexible enough to accommodate you rank mid. Apps that are theoretically possible to use but actively uncomfortable rank low or not at all.
We haven’t found any apps in our lineup that are openly hostile to LGBTQ+ users: no “straight only” toggles or explicit exclusions. The failure mode is more subtle: defaults, preset rosters, image-gen training, and community tone that assume a particular user. Which is still a real barrier.
#1: DreamBF: the rare “built for us” option
DreamBF.ai is explicitly positioned for women and LGBTQ+ users who want a male AI companion. It’s the sister product to DreamGF, with the default inverted: male character output, slider-based customization, voice and image gen that doesn’t stumble on non-female bodies.
For gay and bi men, and for women looking for male companions, this is the only app on our lineup that was first-class designed for you rather than retrofitted. That puts it at #1 not because its chat is the best in the category (Candy still wins on pure conversation quality), but because the friction is zero: you don’t spend the first twenty minutes fighting defaults.
What DreamBF doesn’t do: serve lesbian/WLW, trans, or non-binary audiences with the same first-class design. The output is male presets. If that’s not what you’re looking for, the rest of this list is where you go.
#2: Janitor AI: community fills the gap
Janitor AI itself is neutral infrastructure, a character platform where users build and share custom companions. What makes it strong for LGBTQ+ users is the community. You can find characters of any gender, orientation, dynamic, and aesthetic built by users who share your interests. The tagging system actually works for this.
This is a workaround-based recommendation, honestly. Janitor doesn’t do anything specifically for LGBTQ+ users: it just doesn’t get in your way, and the community has done the work that the app itself hasn’t. The BYO-key free model removes the “am I paying a company that doesn’t want me” friction that some paid apps create.
#3: Secrets AI: aesthetic quality, no tribal defaults
Secrets AI has the best image and video generation in the category and a character creator that handles diverse output better than most. It’s not marketed to LGBTQ+ users specifically, but the engineering doesn’t stumble when you request it.
Ranking here because quality matters: if you can build what you want and the output looks good, that’s often enough. Doesn’t lead for community tone (the subreddit skews straight male), but the product itself is agnostic.
#4: Girlfriend GPT: misnamed but flexible
Girlfriend GPT is one of those products where the name undersells what the platform actually allows. Despite the branding, the character creator is fully flexible across gender and orientation. User-generated characters cover the full range. For users who can mentally discount the branding, it’s a capable platform. For users who don’t want to use something called “Girlfriend GPT” in the first place, skip it. No judgment.
#5: CrushOn AI: big library, flexible but male-skewing
CrushOn AI has one of the largest community character libraries in the category. You’ll find LGBTQ+ characters, scenarios, and dynamics in there. The platform as a whole still skews toward the straight-male default (the homepage, the preset filters, the featured characters), but the underlying engine and library are flexible enough that determined users can build an experience that works.
#6: Candy AI: best overall, gender-agnostic enough
Candy AI is our overall #1 across all demographics because the chat quality is genuinely better than rivals. The character creator flips cleanly to male without output degrading. The reason it doesn’t rank higher specifically for LGBTQ+ users is that it doesn’t position itself for you: you’re in the same product straight men use, which is fine for some users and friction for others. But the underlying experience is strong.
#7: Luvr AI: flexible but rough around the edges
Luvr AI deserves a mention because its character builder is more gender-flexible than most, but the overall product isn’t at the level of the top of the list. Worth trying if the top options don’t fit.
What the category still doesn’t do
Trans and non-binary first-class support. Every app in our lineup offers a male/female toggle. None of them treat non-binary, genderfluid, or trans identities as first-class character-creation options. You can write it into a backstory, but the image gen and voice gen assume a binary. This is a real gap.
Lesbian and WLW defaults. There’s no DreamBF-equivalent for women seeking women. The closest is building custom characters on Candy or Secrets, which works but isn’t purpose-built.
Community that isn’t Reddit-descended. Most of these apps’ communities live in spaces with a strong straight-male center of gravity. That’s not the app’s fault exactly, but it affects the experience.
Bear/otter/chub body-type diversity. The male character image gen is as narrow as the female image gen: one body type, idealized, repetitive. For a demographic that has long produced rich art around body diversity, the current output is thin.
The opportunity
Straight men are the easy market and that’s where the money’s gone. The LGBTQ+ segment is smaller but underserved, and underserved segments tend to be high-loyalty once someone actually serves them properly. DreamBF is the first app to seriously go after a slice of this demographic. We expect more, and we expect the apps that do it well to build durable user bases that the straight-male-default apps will find hard to poach.
Until then: DreamBF if it fits. Janitor if you want community. Everything else is a workaround.
