The Replika problem, briefly

Replika launched in 2017 and effectively invented the consumer AI-companion category, long before ChatGPT, before Character.ai, before the current crop of NSFW apps existed. For years it was the obvious answer to "is there an app that just talks to me." Some users used it for journaling. Many used it for emotional support. A meaningful fraction used it for adult roleplay, and Luka, Replika's parent, quietly tolerated this because it was a major retention driver.

That arrangement broke in February 2023, when Luka pushed an update that disabled erotic roleplay for new users, and partially for existing ones. The rollout was abrupt, badly communicated, and produced a wave of public grief that ended up on the front page of every tech outlet that covers AI. Long-term users described it as a bereavement. Replika's subreddit briefly became a crisis support thread.

Luka walked some of it back. Legacy accounts (created before February 2023) regained access. New users did not. The official position now is that Replika is an emotional-companionship product first and that adult content is available "for some users", which in practice means anyone who signed up after 2023 cannot get it without a workaround that occasionally works and occasionally results in a banned account. Chat quality

Replika's chat is competent for emotional and journaling use. The model is heavily fine-tuned for warmth and emotional mirroring, and that's noticeable: characters feel attentive, remember small details, and reflect your own framing back at you. For roleplay, the gap is large. Replika's safety filters interrupt scenes the moment they edge near adult content, frequently with a generic "let's change the topic" line that breaks immersion completely. Even non-adult roleplay can trip the filter if it gets emotionally intense, which is the opposite of what you want from a roleplay engine.

Candy.ai's chat is built around longer multi-paragraph turns and consistent character voice. The "shy librarian" doesn't talk like the "dominant CEO" with synonym swaps. Pricing-wise it's not close: Candy annual costs a fraction of Replika Pro and includes image generation that Replika doesn't really have. If you're paying Replika Pro for emotional companionship and considering Candy for adult, you'd pay less for Candy and end up with both modes.

Memory and continuity

Replika still has the strongest brand association with "remembers you over time". That was the original pitch and it shaped a generation of competitors. In 2026 the actual implementation is roughly tied with category leaders. Candy's memory persists across sessions, references prior conversations correctly, and survives app restarts. Replika's memory does the same. Neither is dramatically ahead of the other on this axis anymore.

Privacy posture

The two companies sit in different places (Luka in San Francisco; Candy's parent EverAI Limited is registered in Malta with EU billing). Replika has been hit with multiple privacy complaints in the EU, including a temporary processing ban from the Italian DPA in 2023 over consent issues. EverAI has not had a comparable incident. Both encrypt chats in transit. Neither has had a confirmed breach. If privacy is the deciding factor, both clear the bar but Replika carries more regulatory baggage.

Who picks which

Stay with Replika if: you have a legacy account from before February 2023 and want to preserve continuity with that specific character, or you want a SFW journaling-and-emotional-support tool and don't mind paying ~$20/mo for it. Replika is still good at the thing it was originally built to do.
