Quick verdict

Janitor.AI wins because both products are doing the same thing and only one of them is free. CrushOn.AI and Janitor.AI are both community-driven character card marketplaces built around text roleplay. The features overlap heavily. The pricing does not.

If you’ve used CrushOn and liked it, Janitor will feel familiar. If you’ve never used either, Janitor is the cheaper way to find out whether this genre works for you, with a library that’s larger and an economic model that’s simpler.

Chat and roleplay

This is where the products most resemble each other.

CrushOn.AI hosts user-uploaded characters, supports NSFW by default, and ships with a reasonable chat engine that handles persona, scene, and basic memory. Standard-tier users get one model, Premium-tier users get better models and higher context limits. Quality is fine, sometimes good, occasionally excellent when a well-built card meets a strong model.

Janitor.AI has 2.2M+ community character cards, which is more than CrushOn’s library by a significant margin. Because you bring your own API key, your model choice determines quality, and that quality can be whatever your API budget allows. Claude Sonnet and GPT-4o class models are common picks. OpenRouter proxies and DeepSeek are popular for users watching costs.

The real gap is scale. More cards means more niches covered, more variants of any given trope, more experimental formats that wouldn’t make it past a curated review. That’s a mixed bag if you want quality control and a clear win if you want variety. Janitor leans variety.

Images

Neither product is in the image generation business, but they handle images differently.

CrushOn.AI integrates image generation in higher tiers, producing scene and character visuals in-chat. It’s not a specialist image tool, but it exists and works as a conversational accessory.

Janitor.AI has no image generation at all. Character cards can embed reference images linked from external hosts, which is common practice in the community, but there’s no generator behind the product.

If in-chat image generation is a must-have, CrushOn has the advantage. If it’s not, this section doesn’t move the needle.

Voice

CrushOn.AI has voice features on Premium. Janitor.AI has none. If voice is part of your list, CrushOn is the option here, with the same caveat that voice in this category is generally serviceable rather than excellent.

Pricing

This is where the comparison decides itself.

CrushOn.AI charges $5.99 a month for Standard, $14.99 for Premium. That’s inexpensive for Standard, fairly priced for Premium given what you get. Annualized: around $72 or $180.

Janitor.AI costs zero on the free tier. It added an optional janitor+ subscription in June 2026 (more context, faster replies, a golden username), but the free tier is still the full site. The BYO-key model means any model spend is between you and the API provider, which you can scale up, down, or off.

Stacked honestly: if CrushOn Premium costs $180 a year and you use Janitor with a moderate OpenAI budget of $10 a month for API calls, you’re at $120 and you own the relationship with the model provider. If you use a cheaper model or less heavily, you’re well under that. If you don’t use paid models at all and stick with free-tier proxies, you’re at literal zero.

Synthlust earns affiliate revenue on CrushOn.AI signups and nothing on Janitor.AI recommendations. That’s relevant context because it means this recommendation costs us money. We still think Janitor is the right call for most people evaluating these two.

Privacy

Both products store user data, but the shape of that data differs.

CrushOn.AI requires an account, stores chats, tracks usage for tier enforcement, and holds your character interactions on its infrastructure. That’s standard for a subscription product. No known breach incidents.

Janitor.AI doesn’t require an account for basic chat use. Accounts exist for saving preferences and creating cards, but the core chat experience can run anonymously. BYO-key routes prompts directly to your API provider, which means Janitor isn’t a chokepoint for your content. Breach exposure is smaller because there’s less to expose.

For users who specifically don’t want their roleplay history sitting in a SaaS database, Janitor’s design does what CrushOn’s can’t.

Who should pick which

Pick CrushOn.AI if:

  • You want in-chat image generation bundled in
  • Voice replies on Premium matter to you
  • A curated single-vendor experience beats a marketplace-of-marketplaces
  • You don’t want to deal with API keys at all

Pick Janitor.AI if:

  • Free is the decisive feature
  • 2.2M+ cards beats CrushOn’s library on variety
  • You’re comfortable plugging in your own API key
  • You want chat-first without paying for bundled features you won’t use
  • Minimizing your footprint with a vendor matters to you

Two marketplaces. One charges rent. Pick the one that matches how you plan to live there.
